Giving Back to the Gut: Prebiotics, Probiotics, and Fiber

Program:

This presentation centers around the role of the microbiome in GI health and disease. Therapeutic strategies to modulate the GI microbiome will be the primary focus of the presentation, including the use of prebiotics, probiotics, and fiber in dogs and cats. Current literature as it relates to these topic will be briefly summarized.

Learning Objectives:

1. Know the major functions of the GI Microbiome as it relates to GI health.
2. Know the types and functions of prebiotics and probiotics.
3. Know the benefits of soluble fiber as it relates to GI health.

Speaker:  Alyssa Sullivant, DVM, MS, DACVIM

Dr. Alyssa Sullivant has been a faculty member in Internal Medicine at Mississippi State University since 2016. She is a clinical track board-certified internist and is the Dot Wells Endowed Professor in Feline Medicine. Her primary interests are gastroenterology, hepatology, and respiratory medicine. Dr. Sullivant has one daughter, Riley, and two boxer dogs, Groot and Flo. In her spare time, she loves CrossFit and traveling.
